My magazine goes against the stigma surrounded by being different and unique, and what some people would consider weird. It supports peoples individuality and the idea of creating your own persona that is special to you. When I am talking about customizing things and the current trends, I attempt to encourage the reader to create their own view of themselves that they are able to express through their clothing that they wear. The entire genre of fashion magazines with big brand names such as Vogue or Beauty Insider are surrounded by the celebrity fashions of their day- to- day life and even their red carpet looks. I want to go outside of just the celebrity's styles and go into the lives of average individuals that aren't known for the clothes they wear, but are still creating their own sense of style simultaneously. My magazine is promoting the differences of individuals, and showing just how much fashion can vary.
Essence magazine was made specifically for African American women which covers the most recent beauty, fashion, entertainment, and culture trends. It was first published in 1970 and has continued its journey for over 50 years to empower these women and boost their confidence, and decrease the stigmas that go along with being a black woman in todays society. On their website, they explain that "Essence communications is the number one media, technology and commerce company dedicated to black women and inspires a global audience of more than 20 million through diverse storytelling and immersive original content". So with over 20 million people subscribed in some way to their magazine, they obviously are going to have a very diverse distribution model. In 2013, Essence posted an article to their website that introduced the new app that would soon be available to iPhone users.
